Abstract

A multiple start local search (MSLS) method was proposed to simultaneously perform local optimization of both the main frame and multiple types of damping devices, such as buckling restrained braces (BRBs) and oil dampers (ODs). The discrete design variables include the cross-sectional dimensions of beams and columns, as well as the layout and performance parameters of BRBs and ODs. Superior design solutions (SDSs) were derived by minimizing the total steel volume of the building, including the equivalent steel volume of BRBs and ODs. The SDSs satisfy both allowable stress design constraints under sustained and moderate seismic loads, and dynamic response constraints under major earthquakes. The proposed method was applied to a 16-story steel office building, and the structural characteristics of the SDSs were evaluated.
