The façade of a tall building serves as more than just an outer shell; it is a crucial architectural element that reflects the building's identity, architectural expression, structural innovations, and societal context. Over time, the design and functionality of skyscraper facades have evolved significantly, shaped by advancements in materials, engineering, and architectural movements. This paper traces the evolutionary development of facades, from the heavy masonry and ornate styles of early skyscrapers, which combined decoration with structural support, to the revolutionary curtain wall systems enabled by steel-frame construction. The paper also explores the rise of glass-dominated modernist facades, which symbolized transparency and technological progress but brought new challenges related to energy efficiency. As architectural trends shifted, postmodernism reintroduced ornamentation and eclecticism in skyscraper design. More recently, with the advent of high-performance facades, the focus has shifted to improved sustainability and innovation, parametric design, and adaptive systems that respond vigorously to environmental conditions. Case studies of tall buildings illustrate these trends, showcasing how façade design has become integral to tall buildings' aesthetic and functional performance. This evolution highlights the façade's role as a common denominator of aesthetics, materials, technology, and the urban environment.
