Abstract

Vertical cities are multi-functional tall buildings, building complexes, and megastructures that integrate virtually every aspect of the horizontal city vertically to create livable and sustainable urban habitats within a single tower or high-rise conurbation. Consequently, they transpose the physical and social patterns of the horizontal city into a sustainable and fully integrated vertical domain. The relationship between living and working is also changing with remote work. Postindustrial cities have been undergoing major transformations where vertical cities are being designed with spaces and amenities to facilitate productivity, innovation, sociability, and sustainability. As living and working become more integrated with daily life, architects, planners, and developers are reimagining living, working, commerce, and leisure within a vertically integrated city.
