Advances in Tall Building Design for Sustainable Architecture and Vertical Urbanism: The Case of Mass Timber Structures

Tall wood buildings of the 21st century are a new breed in the evolution of skyscrapers that originated in the late 19th century. Nonetheless, the contribution of employing mass timber in tall buildings of large scales could be significant to sustainable architecture and vertical urbanism. This paper provides an introductory review of today's tall mass timber buildings. While a holistic review is carried out, emphasis is placed on structural design with mass timber for tall buildings and its performance. Not only all timber but also various hybrid timber systems, such as timber-concrete, timber-steel, and timber-concrete-steel hybrids, are presented with case studies. Supertall mass timber buildings are also discussed as a future of this new breed of skyscrapers.
